Prior to moving to Southern California I hardly ever wore shorts. My legs have always been my biggest insecurity and I’ve spent most of my life trying to hide them. I have an athletic figure with very muscular thighs and I absolutely cannot stand shorts that are tight on my legs. It is simply too hot here most of the year to not wear shorts so I’ve searched long and hard to find what works for me. Today I’ll be sharing my personal tips for finding the best shorts for you as well as my favorites.
Being on the shorter side, I’ve found that longer inseams (4 inches and longer) only make my legs look thicker. That is definitely not what I want! I tend to stick with 2-3″ inseams for my height. I’d say this would look best on girls 5’5″ and under, if you’re taller you may still be able to get away with a longer inseam.
Due to the slanted pockets and welt pockets, I cannot wear chino styles as they only emphasize my hips and upper thigh area. Cargo shorts are also a no go due to the added bulk of pockets on the thigh. The best shorts styles and fits are cutoffs and boyfriend fits. These usually have extra room in the thighs for a relaxed fit.
Generally, I will shop for my true size but if the pair I love doesn’t have a cutoff or boyfriend style I will often size up to get some extra room in the thighs. Also look for details like side slits that help for a more comfortable fit.
In denim shorts a mid or low rise will typically work better. They sit lower on the hips so the leg openings will also be lower thus giving you the extra room in the thighs that you need. I have found some pairs of high waisted paper bag/tie waist styles that are also roomier in the legs that I love.
