It isn’t often that my husband and I get to enjoy a date night. When we do, it is almost always at the Groundlings in Hollywood. You’re probably wondering, what is the Groundlings? Well, to be honest, until about 8 months ago, I didn’t know either.
Late one night we were watching our favorite show on truTV, Impractical Jokers. The show had ended but neither of us were paying attention and left the TV on as background noise. The next show to come on was a truInside special about the Groundlings. We were immediately captivated and were pleasantly surprised to find out it was right here in LA.
The Groundlings is an intimate improv theater that was started in the mid 70’s by Gary Austin. Across the street from the theater is the school where the performers get their training. Some of the most popular comedic actors are Groundlings Alumni.
Some things to know:
- Tickets are on average $14-20. We have been about 6 times now and each time has been awesome. I’d have to say that their Thursday night show, Cookin’ With Gas, is definitely my favorite.
- Valet parking is available (average rate is $10)
- No late seating is permitted!
- Popular shows will sell out, buy tickets in advance online and pick up at “will call”
Being an improv show, one of the best parts is you will never have the same exact experience twice (with the exception of some of their scripted special performances). It is absolutely hilarious every single time and it’s incredible to watch the raw talent and quick wit of the actors in action. Also, their alumni are always popping in for surprise performances or supporting their fellow actor friends in the audience. It is always a great place for unexpected celebrity sightings.
Whether you’re a Los Angeles local or visiting from out of town, this is a definitely something to add to the top of your bucket list.
