Styled by Erika: Choosing Your Color Palette

Happy June my friends! Can you believe that it’s June? I swear it was January 5 minutes ago. As I sort of alluded to last week in Creating a Wardrobe for All Seasons, today’s post is all about choosing your color palette.

Why is choosing a color palette so important?

Choosing a color palette not only makes shopping much easier but it also makes getting dressed easier too. When you have a specific color palette, you know what you’re looking for while shopping which saves time. You also know what color combinations look best together which makes putting outfits together a lot easier thus also saving you precious time. It also is great for helping you realize what looks best on you and then you can start eliminating unnecessary items from there.

I like to keep my home, closet and life in general as clutter free as possible. It’s a good idea to periodically go through and eliminate things that are worn out, no longer fit or no longer fit into your lifestyle. Many studies show links to clutter and elevated stress levels.

In my wardrobe, I personally prefer more of a neutral and muted color palette. I wear mostly black, white, grey, tan, olive green, blues and pale pink. Occasionally I will add warm summery colors like mustard, plum, burnt orange and cool reds. I have a warm to neutral skin tone so I feel this is what looks best on me.

Also, you never have to fear neutral colors going out of style and they are all versatile and complimentary in nature. When it comes to shoes I definitely stick to shades of brown and tan, black, white and grey with a little bit of leopard for variety. I like to get a bit more adventurous with colors when it comes to accessories though. Try not to add too many different patterns into your closet as those can be tough to match. I am obsessed with stripes, florals and leopard prints however. Aside from that it’s rare you’ll find me in many other prints.

As a general rule try to stick to no more than 4-5 colors outside of black, white, grey and brown for the most versatile closet.
