We as a nation are so incredibly diverse but I think that there is one thing we can all agree upon and that is our love of pizza. Who doesn’t love pizza? I mean c’mon, there are so many different variations that there truly is something for everyone. Even your gluten free paleo vegan friend’s can find some form of pizza that they enjoy. I feel like families unite while eating pizza. I’ve tried Chicago deep dish and New York thin. Call me biased but, I think California does it best. If you’re visiting from out of town or a SoCal native, here are my top 8 Southern California Pizza Places to Try Before You Die:
This is my absolute favorite Southern California pizza place. What I love the most about Midici is that everything is made with fresh, organic ingredients. They serve personal sized pizzas at an affordable price with gourmet combinations and toppings. Their crust is on the thinner side but not crunchy and is always cooked to perfection. They also make a nutella and berry calzone dessert that is to die for. Our favorite is the double pepperoni but everything on their menu is incredible.

This restaurant is authentic Italian and very family friendly. They use very high quality ingredients for their unique combinations. This is a more traditional restaurant and is a little pricier but the price is justified in their quality and service. We ordered the Speck, Mozzarella di Bufala, Olive Tapenade & Oregano and the Egg, Bacon, Yukon Gold Potato & Bermuda Onions and both were phenomenal. My only complaint was that the portions were a bit small.
Topper’s is the kind of pizza place that you bring your kids after a weekend soccer game. It is very family friendly and they have a very large salad bar, arcade games and they deliver (huge bonus!). Although it is more traditional, it is one of the best Southern California pizza places you will find. They also have a great selection of draft beers and consistent quality and service. The crust is the perfect thinness and they spread the toppings all the way to the edges. We love pretty much everything there but our favorites are the BBQ Chicken, Hawaiian Heat and Creamy Garlic Chicken.
Pizza Man Dan’s has a similar style crust and atmosphere to Topper’s Pizza Place. They have several locations in Ventura County and also deliver. (They’ll even deliver it straight to the beach!). In addition to pizza they also have a full salad bar, sandwiches and calzones. They are also a great place to bring your family and have arcade games for the kids. We love their Hawaiian BBQ with jalapenos.
The Pizza Press is similar to ModPizza, Pieology or Pizza Rev in that they serve customized personal pizzas however, they are by far the best in their class. The ingredients are very fresh and the pizzas are always cooked to perfection. We love The Sun and The Times.
Pizza Port also brews their own craft beer which is a HUGE bonus. They have unique combinations, a traditional style crust and a laid back family friendly atmosphere. There prices are reasonable and it’s always busy. It’s a great place to spend your Friday night. Great news for all of you beer lovers because they’re beers are widely distributed to liquor stores in Southern California. Even if you can’t make it to San Diego County to try the restaurant, I’d highly recommend trying their beers. They specialize in IPA styles but do have other options as well. We love the Swammi’s IPA and the KOOK IPA.
Ok, so this isn’t technically a pizza place at all, but, their D’Lox pizza is absolutely amazing! The fresh arugula and capers compliment the rich salmon flavor. There are so many fresh and savory mouthwatering flavors, it’s one of the best unconventional pizzas I’ve ever tried. They also have several other pizzas I’d love to try as well as a full bakery and cafe menu. I’ve been impressed with the quality and service every time I’ve eaten there.
They are technically an Italian Fusion restaurant but they’ve got some amazing pizza. They are more of an upscale type restaurant however, they do offer a kids menu and crayons which can sometimes be hard to come by at these types of places. In addition to pizza they serve tapas, pasta, meat and seafood. Their bacon & double cream brie pizza is the perfect combination of salty and savory and comes in a personal yet satisfying side. Even my 4 year old loved it and she is tough to please!
